JASON LEWIS talking
"It's like being possessed, but in a good way."
about jason lewis
Born in Birmingham and raised on an overspill estate on the outskirts of the city, Jason Lewis thought that poetry was confined to the vintage anthologies of Keats and albums of Tennyson recitals that were in his house.
At 15, a teacher gave him something by Allen Ginsberg, followed by some Ted Hughes to read and it felt like an explosion.
At 50, he started to attend poetry readings and they reminded him of that initial blast. However, unlike his 15-year-old self, he now had a lot of stuff that he wanted to say. Much of that stuff had been lurking, hidden, from when he was a teenager, he just didn’t know it at the time…
"Like a hypnotic trance, I never know what’s going to come to the fore when I start writing. It’s like being possessed, but in a good way."
Jason is also the Reviews Editor for online Arts, Music and Culture Fanzine, Outsideleft.com
